WordPress - Installing & Getting Started
Registration is required for this offering (below).
Description:
If you want an easy, powerful way to update your website often, you want WordPress.  This flexible, highly customizable content management system (CMS) is ideal for blogs, small business websites, online art galleries, and more. This is the first workshop in BDA's WordPress series, designed to get you set up and running in WordPress.org.

Web developers with a solid grasp of HTML and CSS can install WordPress.org on their web server and edit their website through a sleek online interface.  Thousands of free widgets and themes offer endless customization possibilities, and multiple user types allow clients to update text, pages, and blog posts without disturbing the site's architecture.

This workshop will cover:
  • Finding a host
  • Installing WordPress (automatic versus manual install)
  • Basic security
  • Finding and installing plugins and themes (recommendations)
  • Setting WordPress options
  • Using Widgets
  • Creating a Page and a Post
  • Questions and answers

Please note that WordPress.org is different from WordPress.com. WordPress.com is only for blogs and non-commercial sites. BDA's workshops cover WordPress.org.

Presented as a Lecture-Style Workshop:
These are our most affordable training programs, designed to introduce a subject quickly and efficiently. Students can take notes from the instructor's projected computer screen, and/or bring their own computer to follow along. Lecture-style workshops are normally held on weekday evenings from 6 pm – 9 pm and contain a maximum of 30 students (average is 8-20).
Who Should Take This:
Web developers who have taken Introduction to HTML and CSS Based Web Design or have equivalent experience coding by hand.
Instructor:
M. Douglas WrayDoug Wray has been working with online information systems since 1984. Starting in science using TeX and LaTeX realtime rendering on Macs progressing to desktop publishing for commercial printing thence into web design. He's used numerous electron-herding methods including HTML and CSS. Sometime in 2001 he broke with convential wisdom and stopped using tables for structure - following in the footsteps of Eric Meyer and Jeffrey Zeldman. He now builds websites exclusively with CSS and finds it an exciting and challenging pursuit.
