Description:

Telling the Story with Light and Shadow:

      A Lighting Workshop for Filmmakers

A boy is sitting at the dining room table. The room is dark, light from a hallway lights the boy’s face. The moon casts the shadows of trees on the window behind him.

Uncomfortable, right? The lighting tells us immediately that something is wrong.

Lighting is an integral part of the Storytelling process. Whether we are lighting a feature film, an interview or a food show we are telling a story. Light is necessary every time we focus the lens. The way a picture on the screen impacts the viewer is determined by the light. The quality, angle and brightness of the light evoke different emotions.

This workshop will demonstrate lighting techniques that will help you apply the art and craft of lighting in your film-making endeavors.  It is appropriate for all experienced filmmakers who want insights at playing with lighting.

The class will explore the wide variety of lighting instruments, from 12,000 watt HMIs to a 100 watt light bulb. From large light sources to a pin point of light. Why is the most important light the one you do not turn on? Often the shadow tells us more than what we can see.  We will then set up a scene, light it in several different ways and film it. We will evaluate the lighting in each scene and discover why it changes our response to the scene.  We will also explore the lighting in scenes that have been shot by several masters of Cinematography.  Lastly, we will explore lighting an Interview.

Bring your work gloves as this will be a hands-on workshop!

The class is being held at one of Denver’s premier film studios Lighting Services, Inc. (LSI) in central Denver.  This is a unique opportunity to work with a cinematographer with many years of experience, in a studio setting with tons of professional gear to play with.  In addition, there will be an opportunity to tour the facility at some point in the day.

If you have any questions about the class you can contact Edward Done at dp@edwarddone.com.

I thought Ed did a great job teaching the class. Having Nelson there and helping teach was an important part of the success of the workshop IMHO. Loved the exposure to so many different types of lights. Well done overall. I'd highly recommend it to a friend!

Location:
BDA Studio
2510 47th Street, Suite 202, Boulder, CO  80301
If you've never been to the BDA Studio before, we encourage you to leave a few minutes early to give yourself a little extra time to find it. The BDA Studio is located just off 47th Street, between Pearl and Valmont. 47th Street is the frontage road on the east side of Foothills Parkway, that parallels Foothills Parkway. Look for a white and green stucco-front, 2-story building on 47th Street about halfway between Pearl and Valmont. The BDA Studio is located above Alpine Sports; there is plenty of parking in front of the building. Enter through the door on the South side of the building (where you will see BDA Studio signage). The studio is located on the second floor in Suite 202, right at the top of the stairs. The Google map will get you pretty close, but is not entirely accurate; so please use the above description to be sure you make it the rest of the way!
