Description:
Considering "getting your feet wet" in web design & development? Not sure where to start or don't know what you don't know? The Fundamentals of Web Design class will provide a broad overview of the technologies involved, including: - FTP and why it should be the first tool in your web developer toolbox.
- HTML basics, what's involved in writing it and understanding the basic elements of a webpage.
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and how they control the presentation of HTML.
- Javascript and its role in user interaction, how it integrates and why it matters.
- Flash and what role it plays in presentation, interaction and the ups and downs of using it.
- PHP and ASP will be discussed in very general terms with an eye toward use of dynamic pages and Content Management Systems.
We'll talk about information architecture - what should go where and why. We'll discuss how to keep your site from turning into a birds' nest of folders and hard-to-decipher files. Hosting and maintenance will be discussed along with user support from the design phase up to helping your users take over a site after you've built it.  In short, everything you need to think about BEFORE you begin designing a site to save you hours of time and trouble later.
Presented as a Lecture-Style Workshop:
These are our most affordable training programs, designed to introduce a subject quickly and efficiently. Students can take notes from the instructor's projected computer screen, and/or bring their own computer to follow along. Lecture-style workshops are normally held on weekday evenings from 6 pm – 9 pm and contain a maximum of 30 students (average is 8-20).
Who Should Take This:
Anyone who wants to build a website but doesn't know where to begin - or even what questions to ask!
Instructor:
Doug Wray has been working with online information systems since 1984. Starting in science using TeX and LaTeX realtime rendering on Macs progressing to desktop publishing for commercial printing thence into web design. He's used numerous electron-herding methods including HTML and CSS. Sometime in 2001 he broke with convential wisdom and stopped using tables for structure - following in the footsteps of Eric Meyer and Jeffrey Zeldman. He now builds websites exclusively with CSS and finds it an exciting and challenging pursuit.
