Digital photography and the law that goes with it is getting more complex all the time. What can you legally use in your photos and how can you best protect your rights in them? This workshop will make sure you're up-to-date on the latest law that accompanies the latest technology, and equip you with some good, practical business and negotiating skills too.

This workshop will cover:

In the beginning: Forming your entity
Is it original enough? Dealing with idea vs. expression and scenes a faire issues
Work Made for Hire and why it matters to both you and your staff
Depicting people, places and IP in your photo - releases, licenses, permits and the possibility of Fair Use
Best practices in registering your copyright
The collective works privilege: what your copyright means in a compilation setting
Protecting your portfolio submission
Infringement - implied licenses and enforcing your rights online (while avoiding litigation)
TOS - who owns what on social networking sites
Negotiating contracts and licenses: bad language to avoid
Metadata/watermarks in the face of the Orphan Works legislation - contending with stripping

Photographers of all levels who want to make sure their legal bases are covered and their intellectual property is protected. Patricia Murphy

Patricia Murphy is a media/entertainment law attorney and author of an upcoming book on the cultural backlash against geeks and the unique physiology of creative people. A graduate of the University of Southern California Law School - where she was selected for the Hale Moot Court honors program - she's licensed in both Colorado and California. She practiced real estate and business litigation with an emphasis in software copyright issues before moving to the Boulder area in 1997.

Tricia has spoken extensively about creative physiology to groups of parents and practitioners, and especially likes working with digital artists and creative professionals.
