WordPress for Developers - Creating Child Themes

Characteristics Of This Class:

WordPress child themes inherit the functionality of their parent theme and allow you to modify, or add to, the functionality of that parent theme. This workshop will teach you how to quickly make an unique and professional-looking website by starting with a Premium WordPress theme and customizing it via a child theme.

With a little understanding of HTML and CSS, you can make a very basic child theme to modify the styling and layout of a parent theme to any extent without editing the files of the parent theme itself. That way, when the parent theme is updated, your modifications are preserved!

This workshop will cover:
  • Overriding the multiple parent theme's styles
  • Creating custom page templates for the child
  • Modifying background images
  • Creating a custom header
  • Using functions.php to add functionality to the child theme, such as additional widget areas
  • Plugins to use to customize sidebars throughout the site
  • Other tips and tricks
Please note:
WordPress.org
is different from WordPress.com. WordPress.com is only for blogs and non-commercial sites. BDA's workshops cover WordPress.org.

Who Should Take This:

WordPress designers and developers with HTML and CSS skills and experience using FTP. You should take WordPress for Beginners - How to Run Your Own Site/Blog if you've never worked with WordPress before.
