Be Your Own STROBIST: Using your Flash Creatively
Characteristics Of This Class:
We'll start with exposure basics, then jump right into the technical and artistic options a camera flash adds. The first half of class includes lots of presentation examples on-screen. In the second half, the instructor will be shooting photos in class and displaying them on the big screen to show what happens and how.
This class covers using a removable camera flash, not the pop-up kind. You do not need to bring cameras or flash to class, but you are welcome to.
This workshop will cover:
- Compensation & power control
- Color correction
- Diffusion
- Direction & bouncing
- Off-camera options (TTL or manual)
- Ambient fill
- Zooming & snooting
- Panning, motion and sync speed
- Front and rear curtain sync
- Using multiple pops (more than one flash from your one flash!)
- The 'inverse square' rule and what it means for your flash
- Guide Number...what it means for buying and using a flash

Who Should Take This:
Photographers who want to master use of the flash. You should take Introduction to Digital Photography first if you're not fully comfortable with your camera. This workshop is geared towards photographers on a budget, but the concepts apply to studio lighting as well.
Erik Stenbakken
Photographer Erik Stenbakken shoots for editorial and commercial clients ranging from the obscure to the famous. He's been technical director on shoots for Nikon and Ford Motor Company as well as instructed several National Geographic photographers on technical aspects of artificial light and equipment. Before becoming a photographer, Stenbakken was a teacher and he still loves to teach. No questions are stupid, so come with your questions and frustrations and leave with answers and solutions!
