WordPress for Developers - How to Create and Use Widget Areas

Characteristics Of This Class:

Widgets aren't just for sidebars - they enable any part of your WordPress site to display dynamic content like videos, ads, slideshows, Twitter feeds, and more! One of WordPress's greatest assets is the ability to widgetize your themes for dynamic content on your home page, footer, sidebar, header and other areas.

If you have a solid understanding of WordPress template files and are comfortable working with FTP and modifying your theme, you're ready to take your skills to the next level by creating new widget areas and further customizing your site.

This workshop will cover:
  • Creating new widget areas via the functions.php file
  • Adding these widget areas to various template files, such as the header, footer, sidebar, or home page
  • Plugins you can use to easily and quickly add custom sidebars to every post and page on the site
  • Plugins you can use to provide WYSIWYG text formatting to custom text widgets
  • Widgets for adding video, ads, slideshows, Twitter feeds, and more to various parts of your site
Please note:
WordPress.org
is different from WordPress.com. WordPress.com is only for blogs and non-commercial sites. Though some of the information will be relevant to people using WordPress.com, BDA's workshops cover WordPress.org.

Who Should Take This:

WordPress developers with strong HTML and CSS skills who feel comfortable modifying WordPress template files.

Angela Bowman

Angela Bowman of MoonGooseDesigns.com and AskWPGirl.com has been involved with internet technologies since 1996 when she became a member of the online tech support team at Quark, Inc. After learning about WordPress at BDA, she became a full-time WordPress guru, serving individuals and small- to medium-size organizations. She stretches the boundaries of WordPress by making extensive use of its built-in features combined with judicious use of plugins and creative CSS. Angela will help you think outside the blog box by helping you understand the nuts and bolts of WordPress and to endlessly customize your WP themes.

The class was packed full of great, useful information that I will be using right away.
