Studio Lighting for Photography

What You'll Learn

This demonstration-based workshop is a beginner's one-stop-shop for learning how to use basic studio lighting for most photography needs. Not only will we be discussing light in photography but we'll cover: several equipment brands and ways to economically get started with your purchases, use of umbrellas and softboxes, 'key' and 'fill' lights, lighting people vs. sets and products and the use of reflectors.

Lighting can be a challenge but we'll help you develop a solid foundation to be able to set up and light like a professional. The Instructor's DSLR will be tethered to a laptop to provide instant illustration of approach and concept.

This Workshop will cover:

  • Introduction to strobe lights
  • Illustrations of hard light versus bounced light
  • Key light and Fill light demonstrations
  • Use of one 'main' light and basic lighting for portraits
  • Introduction of a backlight
  • Lighting your background
  • Basic product lighting
  • Use of a boom light
  • Main and fill light for object lighting
  • How to approach the product in terms of reflection and modeling
  • Tethered camera shooting will be demonstrated

The class will focus on the use of electronic flash and how to approach a studio lighting system you don't usually use or own (i.e.- using a rented light kit or using some else's setup.)

Who Should Take This

Anyone looking to advance their working skills in photography will benefit. Curiosity is the only thing required.
