10-Week Teen Program
Registration is required for this offering (below).
Description:
BDA is very excited to announce our first youth-focused training program designed specifically for high school students (ages 14-18)!

This fun and in-depth multidisciplinary program will focus on integrating different digital media for the purpose of art and self-expression. It will immerse participants in both video production and web development with a project-based approach culminating in a public exhibition of the student's work after the final week!

Video production topics will include how to plan your project and organize shooting to make editing go smoothly, and how to use lighting to improve image quality and dramatic effect. We will also discuss different ways of using video as an artistic medium, including narrative, documentary, and more experimental and poetic forms, with a particular emphasis on what forms work well on the web and how web distribution has affected the kinds of video being produced.

The web development portion of the program will focus on how to design a site creatively to best reflect your content. We’ll take a peek at the world of web-based art and discuss how a website can be a work of art in its own right rather than merely a place to display other media. We’ll teach some tricks for creating a more interesting and dynamic interface, and integrating video seamlessly and creatively. We’ll talk not only about how to build a website but about how to make sure people can find it through Google and social media.

Students will be encouraged to bring any talent, skill, knowledge or interest in other media such as music production, photography, podcasting, game design, or writing to their projects. Though these subjects will not be covered in detail in class, there will be time set aside for our two instructors to work individually with students so that they can create projects tailored to their own interests, talents and passions.

The program will be every Wednesday afternoon from 3:45pm to 6:45pm for ten weeks starting March 3, 2010. The registration cost covers all 10 sessions and participation in the public exhibition. The last 45 minutes of every session will be lab time allowing students to leave a little early if necessary for other commitments. All equipment will be provided.

The program will be held at the YWCA in Boulder located at 2222 14th Street/14th and Mapleton (click here for a map).

In addition to the public screening and inclusion into the student's website, video productions will also be aired on Boulder's Channel 22!
This class is for you if:
  • You have something to say and you want to know how to communicate it to a larger audience through digital media on the web,
  • You've played around with video and now you're looking to increase your skills and find a way to get your work out beyond YouTube and your parents' living room,
  • You have some web development knowledge but want to go deeper or create more interesting and varied content, OR
  • You're new to video and web development but you're ready to dive deeply and intensively into both subjects and come out with a cool project.

Note: Students must be high school age (14-18).
