Getting Started with Adobe Photoshop

What You'll Learn

If you want to enhance your photos and create fantastic designs with Adobe Photoshop, start here! This class is a general introduction to the information you need to get started using Photoshop.

We'll begin with a look at the interface and learn some basic Photoshop skills, like working efficiently with Photoshop's tools, undoing mistakes, and saving in different file formats. We'll cover how to work with Layers and why they're so important. And we'll introduce how and when to use selections. You'll leave this class with the basics under your belt, so that you can confidently move on to add more specific applications of Photoshop to your photography or design work.

Basic skills:

  • The Photoshop interface
  • Undoing mistakes & saving
  • Choosing a file format
  • Image resizing
  • Intro to photo editing

Selection essentials:

  • Why select
  • The most useful selection tools

Layers:

  • Why layers are so important
  • Working with the Layers panel
  • Building a layered file
  • Combining images

Presented in Adobe Creative Cloud, but most of what is taught will apply to earlier versions of the program.

What to Expect

  • As this is a beginner's level workshop, it will not cover advanced Photoshop techniques like creating 3D designs, working with video and other more intermediate and pro actions.
  • As a lecture-style workshop, we do not encourage bringing your computer to "follow along" in the Photoshop program as there is no time to help with individual navigate via their own computers.
  • Moving to Photoshop from other software solutions is a detailed and time consuming task and this workshop does *not* cover how to do that in detail as the variations and individual needs are endless.

Who Should Take This

Anyone who wants to use Photoshop to edit photos or create graphics for print or the web. If you've never used Photoshop, OR if you've played with Photoshop a little and gotten thoroughly confused, this workshop will make everything clear!

Hobbyist or amateur photographers with Photoshop Elements should take Getting Started with Photoshop Elements instead.

I've been using photoshop minimally for a couple of years, just winging it, and wanting to do more but never finding time to explore. This class was a helpful introduction - a way to get an overview. I have already started to use what I learned. It seemed like the experienced users in the class also found it helpful. I recommend this class.Anita on 10/24/2014

This was my first experience with BDA. The Getting Started with Photoshop class with Jan Kabili is one of the most useful introductory courses I've taken. Now I have enough information to make a good print from my digital camera using Photoshop, and I can improve from here. And, Jan gave us some secrets about the software that some seasoned users may not know. This is a great course for beginners and at an unbelievable price.Katrina on 3/21/2007
I loved the class! It was refreshing to have an open, yet small enough, class where discussions and questions were welcomed and the teacher communicated so well. I definitely plan to come back. I liked the "workshop" also because in our busy lives, this is great and easier to fit into the daily schedule!Christina on 3/21/2007
I was impressed with how much l could still learn in Jan's "Getting Started with Photoshop" class, even though I have had previous Photoshop experience!Joan on 10/19/2006
Last night's class was wonderful! Even though we covered all the basics, there was so much that we didn't have time to touch on! the instructor was super who better to learn from than the person who wrote the book on photoshop. I think BDA should host intermediate photoshop very soon. allison on 3/21/2006
