Characteristics Of This Class:

Due to its popularity, hackers have been targeting WordPress websites, but you can secure your WordPress site to prevent and recover from these attacks! Both WordPress users and developers will leave with solid security practices.

This workshop will take you through 12 steps to making your WordPress website or blog more secure. We will cover basic precautions that any level user can employ as well as more detailed technical tips.

This workshop will cover:
  • Creating and implementing strong usernames and passwords
  • The vulnerabilities of WordPress plugins and how hackers exploit them
  • Why using public wi-fi can allow your site to be hijacked
  • Locking down your login and protecting your login username
  • Limiting what search engine spiders can index
  • Installing must-have security plugins
  • Creating full backups of your content and database
  • Recovering from a hack (restoring the database and files)
  • Protecting important and vulnerable WordPress files and database
Please note:
WordPress.org
is different from WordPress.com. WordPress.com is only for blogs and non-commercial sites. BDA's workshops cover WordPress.org.

Who Should Take This:

WordPress developers and users who need to make sure their sites are secure. You should take WordPress for Beginners - How to Run Your Own Site/Blog if you haven't used WordPress before.

Angela Bowman

Angela Bowman

Angela Bowman of MoonGooseDesigns.com and AskWPGirl.com has been involved with internet technologies since 1996 when she became a member of the online tech support team at Quark, Inc. After learning about WordPress at a BDA class three years ago, she became a full-time WordPress website coder, customizing themes for individuals and small- to medium-size businesses and organizations. Her focus is on stretching the boundaries of WordPress beyond a blogging tool by making extensive use of the built-in features of WordPress combined with judicious use of plugins and creative CSS. Angela will help you think outside the blog box by helping you understand the nuts and bolts of WordPress and how you can endlessly customize your WordPress themes.

Angela is incredibly knowledgeable. A very good overview of possible security risks and steps to take to avoid them.

She made a dry topic interesting and fun!

Val, 6/1/2011

This class was invaluable.

Lindsay, 3/9/2011

This class has alerted me to the many ways I can secure my WordPress site. Angela did a great job presenting the material and was very open to feedback and questions from the group. I had no idea how many plugins, etc were available to enhance the security of a WP site. All in all I found the class very worthwhile.
