Intro To Programming with Ruby Hands-On Intensive

What You'll Learn

We are surrounded by computers. Every day, we have to interact with a device to send an email, take a picture or buy airplane tickets to our next vacation.

In this course you will learn the basic programming skills to start building applications on your own with popular Ruby language. You will learn how to handle different data structures, how to understand an application's control flow, and how to implement the essential pieces of a computer program.

By the end of this course, you will be able to build basic command-line apps, and understand the basic concepts of programming with Ruby. You'll also be ready to move onto our next-step class Ruby On Rails Hands-On Intensive.

In this course you will learn the following basic programming skills:

  • How to create your development environment including installing Ruby 2.0 and Rails 4.0
  • How to create and manipulate data structures
  • How to design an application control flow
  • How to create a command-line application
  • How to render graphics

A Hands-On Experience
This is not "sit back and watch slides" type of class! All Jumpstart Lab courses at BDA are hands-on and highly experiential. We work with real applications and you'll implement these tools and techniques yourself. By the end of the class, you'll have real experience, real skills, and real code to reference.

BDA can provide a Macintosh computer workstation to use for this class or, if you prefer, you can bring your own computer. If you bring your own computer you will need a computer with Mac OS or Linux (Windows users can setup Linux in a virtual machine). Either way, the first thing you'll learn is how to install Ruby 2.0 and Rails 4.0. Detailed setup instructions will be sent out a week before the class. After you register, please let BDA staff know if you are brining a computer or if you'd prefer to use one of our workstations.

Who Should Take This

This course is designed for people with no previous programming experience. Students should be comfortable using computers but no previous computer science knowledge is required. This is the perfect introduction class for those who wish to learn Ruby on Rails.
